Let’s Talk Dirty – Mud Baths in Calistoga
By Rachel Puryear
In the Napa Valley region of California – an area world famous for its natural beauty, wineries and food, and arts and culture – there’s an adorable little town called Calistoga.
In Calistoga, you can do something that most people don’t do every day – that is, lay in a tub filled with mud. Not only that, but people here pay to do it.
Why? Because it’s very relaxing, and the heat and mud make your skin feel amazing afterwards. It’s a very popular spa treatment here.

One of our favorite mud bath spots in Calistoga is Golden Haven. You can get a mud bath there, or a massage, or both. They also have facials.
They also have a large, covered mineral pool; plus a warm mineral tub, and a hot mineral tub. There’s also an inn, if you want to stay the night.
The place is designed with couples in mind, but also fun for singles and small groups of friends, too.
Note: For any mud bath, you will need to be able to climb in and out of a raised tub. There are grab bars, and the staff can also assist you if needed.
There are also plenty of other places you can explore for mud baths and spa treatments.
Downtown Calistoga is small and highly walkable, with plenty of restaurants, shops, and art galleries. Even in the middle of the night, it felt safe walking around town – there’s a friendly vibe here.
There are also hiking trails with beautiful views, on the outskirts of town.
And of course, there are lots of wineries in the region (in addition to the wine shops in town) – California’s wine country is known for good wine, that’s also inexpensive. Just don’t drink alcohol before a mud bath, or other heat-based treatment.
If you’re in this area, also consider checking out Armstrong Woods State Park in Sonoma County, which is about 45 minutes to the west, from Calistoga.
Also, about half an hour away to the east from Calistoga (in the opposite direction) is Harbin Hot Springs in Middletown. Harbin is a clothing-optional resort with several spring-fed mineral pools. The crowd here tends to be mellow, friendly, and a bit new-agey (if you’re into things like crystals and meditation, for instance, you’ll fit right in).
If you’re traveling through this area, it’s definitely worth a visit, and making it a spa day!
