If you freelance, it’s no secret that self-employed folks do not always enjoy many of the same protections and benefits that traditional employees often receive. We are also used to having our concerns about such dismissed by people who feel that those who chose to freelance cannot complain. However, the reality is of course much more complicated – and in any event, if something is not right, it’s good to fight for improvement, regardless of what the loud naysayers claim.

The Freelancer’s Union formed in New York City, New York in 1995; in order to advocate for the rights of freelancers in New York and across the nation, and also to educate freelancers about their rights. They successfully advocated for fair payment laws in New York, also known as the “Freelance Isn’t Free” Law (love the name!!). Their website has a link to apply for health insurance for freelancers. They offer monthly networking meetups in cities across the nation, which are online for now. And in addition to all of that, membership to join them is free! (Of course, they appreciate donations to help further their work, if you are able.)

So, if you freelance and care about better rights and opportunities for freelancers, then I wholeheartedly encourage you to join the Freelancer’s Union.
