If you live in San Mateo County and you have been thinking of adding an in-law unit (also called granny unit, officially called an ADU, for Accessory Dwelling Unit) to your home, there are plenty of good reasons to do so. They can be a source of extra income, a place to live and downsize while you rent your main home, or a place for an adult child or a caregiver to live.

If you are doing one anyway, why not also make it as environmentally friendly as possible? And even save some money while you’re at it? Thanks to the Housing Endowment and Regional Trust (HEART) of San Mateo County, you can do that.

You can download designs for green, all-electric detached ADU’s. These are available to the public at no cost, on HEART’s website here. The site also includes a link to a city-by-city pre-review requirement process.
