By Rachel Puryear, Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway, (DRE 02099554), Legal Consultant, and Mortgage Loan Originator (NMLS 2019354)

If you would like to do more of your own repairs and maintenance around the house, but don’t know where to begin – or are intimidated by tools – you are not alone. Many people do not get a chance to learn these skills when they are young. Due to societal gender norms, this lack is especially common for girls/women.

Learning some basics about home repairs and maintenance, and using tools, however; can save you a lot of money over time, as well as feel empowering. Whether you own a home, want to own a home, are interested in building or improving a home, or would like to be able to quickly help tenants with a problem in an investment property; here’s a great, beginner-friendly book for getting started:

Cover of the book, “Girls Garage”.

Proceeds from the book also support the nonprofit Girls Garage, an organization in Berkeley, CA dedicated to teaching building skills to diverse teenage girls.

Happy building!
