Waimea Canyon in Kauai, Hawaii

By Rachel Puryear

The Hawaiian island of Kauai is a bit less known than some of its neighbors, but it also has plenty of awe-inspiring beauty to showcase. It’s a little sleepier, too, which can offer a bit quieter island-exploring experience. Here are some highlights of beautiful Kauai:

Waimea Canyon, Kauai, Hawaii.

Waimea Canyon

Nicknamed the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” Waimea Canyon lives up to its moniker. It’s a large, lush, green beauty reflecting its tropical forest environment. Looking out at it inspires awe, makes you feel tiny in a good way, and makes you wish you were a bird so you could just fly over it.

Wailua River State Park

This park offers plenty to explore, and a little something for everyone. You can do a long, scenic drive a long Highway 56 and just take in the views. You can stop at vista points and gaze out at waterfalls and a meandering river through green hills and valleys. You can kayak or canoe along that river. You can learn about Hawaiian culture and history.

You can ride a raft – complete with Hula singers and dancers on board – out to the magical Fern Grotto, a lush rainforest setting with a local tradition of weddings by song and a kiss! I highly recommend seeing the Fern Grotto, as well.

Spouting Horn Park

This beachside park features a blow hole that sprays water into the air every few moments or so, and it’s a pretty cool thing to watch. There’s a nice resort right nearby, too.
