Butano State Park in Pescadero, California
By Rachel Puryear
On the coast of the San Francisco Bay Area region, is the charming small town of Pescadero, along the ocean. One of the great gems found on the outskirts of this town is Butano State Park – acres of trail through gorgeous, quiet, humid forests kept moist, and often draped in layers of fog, by the nearby Pacific Ocean.

Since it’s humid a lot along all these trails, it’s also a great spot for observing mushrooms, moss, and more that fans of fungi will enjoy.

This park is a bit on the rustic side, so be prepared for such. However, it’s off the beaten path a little, and that keeps it incredibly peaceful and quiet, and a great place to get away for a bit. It has picnic tables, outhouse-style bathrooms (no sinks – so bring your own sanitizer and hand wipes), and campgrounds. The parking lot is a little small, so getting there earlier is ideal.
See here for more about visiting the park, including their accessibility information.
