Many people nowadays want to earn their money remotely, in order to enjoy the many benefits of such – flexibility, freedom, the ability to travel, being at home with children and family and pets, environmental considerations, and of course not to mention avoiding a miserable commute.

Of course, what’s even better than working remotely, is earning the big bucks while doing so – and therefore enjoying the good life, and opportunities to build better short and long term financial health and security. I don’t think I need to make the case for that! Some remote income streams, of course, do pay a lot better than others.

For the purposes of this article, I am defining “high paying” as either at least $110,290.00 a year, or $55 an hour (or these earnings are realistic within a few years). These numbers are based upon the 90th percentile earnings for USA workers in 2022, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Note: Very few jobs of any kind will pay that kind of money for an entry level position, though, and that’s just a reality – however, some fields have more job growth potential than others, so the question is whether these earnings are realistic within several years of beginning in a particular field.

Therefore, here are some remote income options that pay well, and can offer significant earnings growth over time:

Software Engineer

If you are tech-minded, detail-oriented, and like developing and perfecting computer software; you could consider a career as a software engineer.

Many software engineer positions are either fully remote or hybrid, so that’s an option in this field.

Entry level software engineers start at close to $100K a year, and with a few years experience, it can go up considerably from there. Senior software engineers can make over $200K a year, especially in tech hubs and in certain fields (like AI).

Web Developer

Web developers use code to design and develop websites, software, and apps. If you are analytical, detail-oriented, and have a strong math aptitude; this could be a great career option for you.

Many web developers work either fully remotely, or on a hybrid basis, and that option is becoming increasingly popular within the field. Some niches within web development (like Drupal) are remote-first.

New web developers typically start around $70K, but salaries go up considerably with more years of experience. Highly experienced web developers can make over $150K.

Cyber Security

Cyber security professionals protect networks and systems from security breaches, hackers, malware, data leakages, and other cyber threats. They’re essential both to protecting information and privacy, and also to keeping many companies in compliance with legal regulations.

Cyber security professionals should have strong technical skills, as well as strong communication skills, conscientiousness, organization, flexibility, vision for the future, and the ability to respond effectively and quickly to crises.

Entry level cyber security professionals make around $86K, while the average professional makes around $133K, and experienced professionals can make over $150K.

Data Analyst

A data analyst collects, processes, and interprets data in order to answer questions, discover facts, and inform business decisions. A data analyst should be analytical, have strong math skills, good critical thinking, be very detail-oriented, and have strong communication skills.

Many data analysts work remotely, and it lends itself well to such.

This field is growing and in high demand. Entry level data analysts can earn up to about $80K, but more experienced ones can earn $120K a year and up.

Nurses (Particularly in Certain Fields)

Nursing is something that most people associate with in-person care, given the high-contact nature of it. However, telehealth nursing has grown in recent years, giving rise to increased opportunities for nurses to earn a living remotely.

Salaries for nurses vary a lot based upon experience and specific medical fields, but remote nurses in some fields such as mental health and psychiatry, case management, critical care, and disease management can earn $115K.

Loan Officers

Do you want to help people buy homes, and qualify for mortgages – and possibly other kinds of loans in order to change their lives? A loan officer reviews loan applications, advises potential borrowers as to what loan products might be good for them, and helps them get what they need together in order to qualify.

Many loan officers work remotely, and this is a friendly profession towards doing so.

Newer loan officers start at around $70K, but with a few years experience, many of them make over $100K a year, and even make $115K or more.

Digital Marketing Professionals

Marketing has been around forever, and it’s also undergone tremendous change during the digital age. Ads in newspapers, magazines, and on billboards and television and radio; have largely given way to ads on websites, apps, social media, and through emails and texts.

Accordingly, digital marketing is a field that’s growing in demand and popularity, and it’s definitely possible to work remotely within this hot field.

Remote digital marketing specialists with some years of experience commonly earn between about $110-120K a year.

Successful Bloggers and Social Media Stars

The top earning influencers, affiliate marketers, and bloggers on social media can make lots of money – well over $110K a year, sometimes well into the six figures, and sometimes seven figures or more.

The catch is, though, that the most successful ones represent a pretty small percentage at the top. However, there are larger percentages who make decent earnings (and maybe over $110K a year), even if not very high earnings.

Additionally, the ones who do become highly successful usually had to work at it for many years – for little return, and maybe even no earnings – before they became successful. And such is life.

But if there’s a subject or products you’re highly knowledgeable and passionate about, and you have what it takes to build a following over time and stick it out until it starts paying decent returns; then once you’ve established yourself well by doing this, then you’ve got it made. You can do it from anywhere, bring in good money, and do something you enjoy – and all on your own terms.

Consultants

If you have expertise about a subject, and other people and businesses need your knowledge, you can set up your own remote shop and provide consulting services with them directly. You can do this self-employed if you do your own marketing and billing.

How much you can earn as a consultant depends a lot on the market value of what people will pay for your expertise. On average, consultants make about $104K a year, but there are many who make considerably more than that – including some making upwards of $250K a year!

Sales

This is a classic route for those who want to work independently and have a shot an high earning potential, and who also have the gregarious and charismatic personality to be successful at it.

This is a riskier route than many of the others – many who go into sales drop out quickly, as they don’t make much, and aren’t able to get many (or any) sales. It’s not for the faint of heart. It’s one of those things where a lot of people put in a lot of effort for a while only to make little to nothing, while the highest earners make most of the money – and those at the very top can make tons of money.

But if you are among those winners of the profession; you can expect low earnings in the beginning, with potentially unlimited income streams to come later on.
