Museums for All Program Helps Low-Income Households Afford to Visit Museums

By Rachel Puryear

Museums are critically important public educational resources for learning more about the world, and preserving cultural artifacts – and more.

Though museum admission fees are well worth it and help support these valuable institutions, not everyone can afford to access them – especially if they’re bringing a whole family along.

In order to help more low income American households afford to access museums across the nation, and also benefit from these great public resources; there is the Museums for All program.

So, how does the Museums for All program work, and who qualifies?

Father and son view exhibits at a museum.

Persons in the United States who receive SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)/EBT benefits (food stamps) can present their benefits card and a photo ID at participating museums; and receive either free entry, or significantly reduced admission prices.

Participating museums are allowed to determine their own policies beyond that, however – including how many people the cardholder may bring in with them, how much the discount will be (or whether it will be free), and possibly other related policies.

Some museums might also accept WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) benefits cards in lieu of EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) cards. Check a participating museum’s website first for further details about their Museums for All policy before going there, if you wish to participate in this program.

Some museums will also allow qualified persons to purchase a membership at a deeply discounted rate, in order to help access the benefits of membership. Also check a participating museum’s website about membership information through the Museums for All program, or inquire with them directly, if you wish to purchase a discounted membership.

See here to search for participating museums near you, or also here to view a full list of participating museums by state.

Do you live in the USA, and not currently receive SNAP benefits, but think your household might qualify? See here for more information about the program, and then follow the links to your state of residence to apply.
