Remote Income Ideas That Are Easy to Start

By Rachel Puryear

If you dream of a life with more autonomy and freedom, and the ability to move around as you please, you likely desire the ability to earn remote income.

For those who can become online video superstars, or who already belong to a high-earning profession that’s compatible with remote work, that path is well set up.

However, those career paths can require lots of time and money to start – and maybe also a little luck. One can put in years of hard work and incur lots of costs before they start to see any results – and some won’t ever reap much in the way of fruits of their labor from these ventures.

Don’t worry, though, there are also remote income options that are much easier to get started in – and where you can start earning money quickly, without special training or education (though having a high school education and some experience is helpful with some of them), and with no or low costs to get started.

Accordingly, here are some remote income ideas that are easy to get started with – and that don’t require a lot of time, money, or special skills to get started:

Online Surveys

If you like giving your opinions and impressions, taking online surveys is a good way to earn a little extra cash.

There are no general requirements for doing this, although individual surveys may be open to people who meet specific criteria (demographics, interests, use of a product type). However, there are plenty of surveys out there, so you’re bound to qualify for some of them.

See here for a list of sites that will pay you to take online surveys.

Website Tester/Search Engine Evaluator

This is an easy gig to start. You can test websites, and also search engine results, in order to give companies valuable feedback in order to give their users the best experience possible. You have a lot of flexibility in terms of your hours and the volume of work you want to take on, and can earn more as you gain experience.

See here for more about becoming a search engine evaluator.

Online Tutoring

No matter what walk of life you come from, you probably know something that’s valuable to someone else. There are lots of opportunities to tutor both children and adults online, about a wide variety of subjects.

Of course, formal teaching experience is helpful. But it’s not necessarily required.

See here for a guide to becoming an online tutor.

Selling Online

If you have an entrepreneurial streak, and have good customer service skills, you could open your own online store. This can be whatever you’re interested in – there’s probably a market for it.

Of course, do your research first – on your competition, as well as your target market. See here for more about selling online.

Virtual Assistant

All kinds of businesses and professionals need assistants, and these kinds of positions are going increasingly remote. Some are entry-level, or don’t require a lot of experience.

FlexJobs is one place to look for virtual assistant positions, and other flexible and remote positions.

Social Media Manager

If you are an avid social media user and have a knack for creating posts that get a lot of attention – and can generate a large and engaged following – you could work as a social media manager.

It should come as no surprise that such a skill set is in high demand right now, by a wide variety of different employers.

If you’d like to take a course in becoming a social media manager, Udemy has one.

Home, Pet, and Garden Sitting

If you are good at either garden and/or pet care, and are generally trustworthy and reliable; you could take care of people’s pets and gardens while they’re away, and watch their homes.

This is probably a better way to supplement your income rather than relying on it as a main source of income. However, there are some people who do this often enough that they don’t need a full-time residence of their own – they just move from gig to gig (probably staying in a van/RV or hotel when they’re not booked).

TrustedHousesitters is one place where you can get started as a house sitter. You can also sign up to become a pet sitter on Rover.

Data Entry

Okay, this isn’t the most exciting or sexiest work out there. But there’s a lot of work like this out there, it’s not difficult, and it’s pretty remote-friendly.

Data entry can include transcribing or speaking data into a computer, updating information in a database, or entering records; as some examples.

Here is one website where you can browse for data entry jobs from home.

Proofreading

If you’re detail-oriented and love helping others shine, you could earn a little extra cash by proofreading others’ work. No formal experience is required, but strong language skills are necessary.

The more languages you speak or write, the more proofreading opportunities this also opens up for you.

Proofreadingservices.com is one website where you can apply for work-from-home proofreading and editing jobs at no cost to you.

Small Investing

It’s no secret that investing money is key to building wealth, as few people make enough money to get there with earnings alone. However, many people believe that one has to already have lots of money first in order to get started.

If you’re able to invest $1,000.00 or more, check out Vanguard. They’re investor-owned, offer diversified, low-cost index funds that are the gold standard of personal investing; as well as relatively high-interest savings accounts; and are much more accessible to low and middle income investors than many other large investment firms.
