Low Stress Remote Income Ideas
By Rachel Puryear
If you dream of a life without a draining daily commute, where you can earn a living in the comfort of your own home, or maybe while traveling the world; you have likely explored remote income options.
Of course, if that’s the case, then you probably also want low stress ways to make such a living. After all, you want plenty of energy to still enjoy yourself, and to cut down on stress.
There are some largely agreed upon factors that make a job stressful. These include being micromanaged, having little control over your time, working long hours, tight deadlines, dealing with difficult or hostile people, and making high pressure decisions.
Of course, no job is completely stress-free – but some are much less stressful than others. Furthermore, not everyone will find each option below low-stress, depending upon their disposition and needs – for instance, introverts and extraverts might differ over what works for them – but hopefully, most people could enjoy doing at least some of these.

Writer/Blogger/Video Star
Always a favorite of digital nomads everywhere, this offers an opportunity to earn remote income – and maybe also passive income. The main catch is that one must first build a following.
If you can swing it, though, you can make a production about anything you’re both knowledgable about and passionate about. Even if it’s a niche, given that the web can reach people worldwide, there are still plenty of potential audience members out there for you.
House/Garden/Pet Sitter
People travel all the time – and when they do; they often need someone else to care for their homes, pets, and gardens while they’re away.
Knowledge of housekeeping, animal care, and/or plant care is very helpful for doing this work. It’s also very important to get a good reputation for being trustworthy, reliable, and doing the job with care.
Typically, people who do this type of work are self-employed, which could include getting some referrals from websites for house sitters.
Market Researcher
If you enjoy both learning more about what makes people tick, interviewing them about their experience and listening, and also helping businesses succeed; you might enjoy being a market researcher.
Market researchers give essential insights to companies to help them better serve their clientele. They also help consumers to better have their needs met.
Loan Processor
People buy and sell homes all the time – and when they’re not doing that, they’re refinancing or taking out credit lines on their homes.
A key person in this process, for every transaction, is a loan processor. They ensure that the borrower submits all required documentation to apply for a loan, and that all to-do items are checked off. They work with the loan officer and the underwriter.
A loan processor should be detail-oriented, conscientious, and organized.
No license is required for a loan processor in California, but there are certification programs to help get up to speed.
Transcriptionist
A transcriptionist makes written transcripts of voice recordings. Many of them work in the medical field; but they are also needed in legal, scientific, business, and other settings, too.
California does not require transcriptionists to be licensed, but getting a certification will greatly help with getting jobs and work.
A transcriptionist must have strong typing skills (at least 60 wpm), accuracy, ability to hear clearly, follow instructions well, and possess required language proficiency (may include terminology – such as medical).
Search Engine Evaluator
This is a job to consider if you either don’t have much work experience; or need to change your career because your current one is incompatible with working remotely, and you want something else to do in the meantime. Of course, the very low barriers to entry means that this doesn’t pay a whole lot.
Search engine evaluators perform search engine searches, and then rate the accuracy and relevancy of the results. This helps search engine companies make sure that searchers are getting the results they want and need to the questions they ask.
This is a great option for someone with limited experience, who enjoys solitary work, and likes solving problems.
See here for more about becoming a search engine evaluator.
Proofreader/Editor
Behind every successful publication, video channel, and other media is a great proofreader and editor.
These folks check every detail, make everything look and sound great, and turn raw material into a polished, finished product.
If you are conscientious, have excellent language proficiency, and strong writing/video/speaking and communication skills; you could help books, videos, and podcasts become audience-ready.
Actuary
If you’re a numbers person who’s willing to put time and some resources into developing this career path, you could be rewarded with well-paying work that can be done remotely, and satisfy your knack for analyzing data, statistics, and making predictions.
Companies hire actuaries to do things like figure out mortality rates, predict product sales growth, or predict the likelihood of future events.
Business to Business Sales
When most people think of sales, they typically think of a business selling a product or service to a consumer.
However, businesses also sell products and services to other businesses. This could include a wholesaler selling canned food goods to a grocery store retailer, or selling software to companies that helps them analyze customer data.
This is great for anyone who’s gregarious and loves interacting with people, is good at persuasion and getting people’s attention, good with follow-through and staying in touch, and enjoys helping others.
Photographer
If you have an artistic streak and a good sense of what’s eye-catching, you might already enjoy taking awesome photos.
Why not use photos you already have and take, and get some royalties for them? There are several online companies where you can upload your photos, and do just that – thereby generating some passive income.
Bookkeeper
Every business needs a bookkeeper, so a good one always has plenty of potential work. Bookkeepers help business owners manage a business’s finances, and maintain up-to-date financial information.
This can include: Tracking income and expenses, accounts payable (paying bills), accounts receivable (billing others), data entry, payroll for employees and contractors, checking bank account information to maintain accuracy, monthly reports summarizing the business’s financial situation, and preparing annual tax returns (perhaps working with accountants).
Unlike accountants, bookkeepers do not need to be licensed, and there is a much lower barrier to entry. However, obtaining certification can greatly help aspiring bookkeepers demonstrate knowledge, and get more work. Bookkeepers can do many functions that accountants do, but a big difference is that only an accountant can make financial forecasts based upon past data.
This work can pay well, especially once you’re more experienced. This can be a great profession for someone who is logical, orderly, and good with numbers.
