You Can Rent Out a Camping Vehicle When You’re Not Using It

By Rachel Puryear

One common complaint from people who own RV’s, trailers, travel vans, and other camping vehicles is that they only use it occasionally when they go somewhere, but then it just sits in their driveway or garage the rest of the time, taking up space. They’re also paying costs to keep it up, even when they’re not actively using it for a while.

Fortunately, there’s actually a good solution to this – one that can make these owners some money, and get it out of the way for a bit.

That would be renting out when it’s not in use. Remember, this vehicle doesn’t have to be an expense, it can also be a money-making asset.

Nowadays, there is even plenty of online infrastructure to help you rent out your camping vehicles. There are websites which do for vehicle rentals what sites like Airbnb do for short term housing rentals.

Check out some camping vehicle sites to connect owners with potential renters, including: RV Share, RV Ezy, Outdoorsy, Go RV Rentals, and many more. This will also help you get a better sense of the rental market first, including in your local geographic area.

There are even some tax advantages to renting out your camping vehicle. For instance, you can deduct business expenses that go into renting out your vehicle, as well as suitably maintaining it for these purposes. As vehicles typically depreciate, you might also be eligible for depreciation deductions.

Renting out your camping vehicle is a great way to earn passive (or maybe semi-passive) income. That should be a goal for everyone, to have more passive income streams.

Accordingly, renting out your camping vehicle can be a smart solution to what you’re going to do with it while you’re not using it.
