Remote Income Ideas for Retirees

By Rachel Puryear

For many retired Americans, their Social Security and other retirement income won’t give them the lifestyle they need or want. Therefore, many older people continue to work long after their official “retirement”.

Remote income opportunities offer many benefits to seniors in need of extra income – avoiding a long and stressful commute, more flexibility to spend time with friends and family and take care of health, more freedom to enjoy things they like doing or still want to do, and avoiding the office politics they’ve spent more than enough time dealing with already.

Therefore, here are some remote income opportunities that might be especially appealing to retirees and seniors:

Mail and Package Receiving

Many people like to travel a lot, or live a mobile lifestyle, or maybe live somewhere without secure mail or package delivery, or want an address somewhere else.

For such people, you could offer mail and package receiving services. You can process mail that comes in, notify the recipients, and hold onto it in a secure location until they are able to come and pick it up.

Rent What You Have

Later in life, people often have more rentable property than they did when they were younger – housing (spare rooms or yards, if not the whole thing), vehicles, equipment, and more.

Nowadays online, you can rent all kinds of property for short durations – homes or parts of homes can rent on sites like Airbnb, there are websites to rent vehicles, pools can be rented on Swimply, and more.

Customer Service

People with maturity and experience have often learned a lot about people skills, and communication. They’ve also likely learned to be assertive where necessary, and developed empathy for when someone needs help.

That often makes them great candidates for customer service positions, especially if they have an outgoing and people-oriented personality.

That doesn’t necessarily have to mean a low-paid position at a call center, either – there are well paid customer service positions with companies who want the high levels of service for their customers.

House, Pet, and Garden Sitting

For people who travel often, they might need someone to look after their home, pets, or gardens while they are away. You probably know a lot about these things already.

So you could make low-stress extra cash providing these services to people in your area while they’re out of town.

Selling Pictures

If you love taking pictures, have developed a good knack for photography, and have been to and photographed a lot of cool places over the years; you could make some money through royalties by selling the pictures on websites like Unsplash, Shutterstock, or Foap.

E-Books, Videos, and Online Courses

At this stage in your life, you’ve gained a lot of experience and knowledge and wisdom.

Share what you’ve learned, and now can teach to the world. You can do this by way of blogs, e-books, videos (you can make income with affiliate marketing on all of these), or by developing and selling online courses.

You can also sell plenty of other items online.

Consulting

If you have developed a lot of experience and wisdom in an industry, but no longer want to do the day-to-day grind, you could still semi-retire and make a living as a consultant for people and companies who do what you used to do. Your expertise and knowledge could be quite valuable to others.
