Romance on the Road: Dating and Van Lifers
By Rachel Puryear
If you spend a lot of time on the road in a travel vehicle, you know that loneliness on the road can be a problem – especially if you’re single, and wanting romance (or even a hookup).
Road life – while awesome in so many ways – does present challenges in terms of having a romantic life. Moving around a lot, living an unconventional lifestyle, and having a small space can make the prospect of dating seem daunting.
However, here are a few tips for finding some romance while on the road:

Make the Most of Your Space
Just because your space is small, doesn’t mean it can’t be comfortable, romantic, and inviting.
Soft, romantic string lights, places to sit and visit (either indoors or outdoors), and a comfortable bed will go a long way towards making your space welcoming to visitors.
Your place doesn’t have to be big to have a good time, and host guests – romantic or otherwise.
There Are Communities For You
There are others out there like you, enjoying a life on the road, while also looking for love.
Check out communities and apps like YourTravelMates.com, Driftr, NomadSoulmates, Sēkr (sometimes called the “Tinder” of nomad dating), and Fairytrail. Whether you’re looking for serious romance, a more casual encounter, or platonic friendships; there are others out there to connect with.
Your Lifestyle is a Selling Point for the Right People
The kind of people who would look down on you for your lifestyle are probably snooty, and they’re just not for you.
Instead, look for other people who also enjoy adventure and traveling, just like you. Others who like to live a simpler life, in order to make a great life possible.
Others like you are out there, and if you’re not finding them, look elsewhere.
If you find someone else who shares your lifestyle, and you get serious together; then you get to decide whether you will move into one vehicle together, or caravan side by side some or all of the time. Either way is okay, and it depends on what works for you.

- Summer is known for its hot days, but for many people, the warm nights are their favorite part. Here are a few things to help you have more fun outdoors after dark:
- How cool would it be to have night vision, and observe the natural world at night? With these night vision goggles and binoculars, you can do just that! See what few people have been able to see, until pretty recent technology. Note: Please keep a safe distance from wild animals, for your protection and theirs.
- If you like to stay up late and sit outside with friends and loved ones on warm evenings, enhance socializing without bright and intrusive lights. Instead, use these glow-in-the-dark wristbands and necklaces to keep track of one another. Also try these glow-in-the-dark drink cups so you don’t spill your drink. If you’re walking around, these headlamps offer red, green, or bright lighting without having to hold anything.
- Learn more about those beautiful stars and cosmos you’re gazing at during the nighttime, and point out constellations to your friends and family, with the Night Sky Almanac: A Month-by-Month Guide to North America’s Skies.
