Social Media: An Inexpensive Way to Help Build Remote, Passive Income

By Rachel Puryear

If you want to make money selling online, creating courses, or become an online influencer using affiliate marketing in order to make remote, (largely) passive income and enable the lifestyle you desire; you’ll need to first build an online following.

People need to know you’re there, and you’ll need to communicate effectively with them, in order for you to become successful at such a venture.

Building an online following typically takes at least two of the following three things: time, effort, and money.

If you don’t have that last one, though, don’t despair. You can still build a following with time and effort using one of the greatest free or cheap resources of our time: social media.

Here are some of the benefits of using social media as a major part of your strategy to grow your online following, and help your online businesses succeed:

It’s Cheap – or Even Free

Generally on social media platforms, you can create an account for free. Some of them have paid options, but even these are usually low cost.

For freelancers and small businesses, watching costs is important – especially in the beginning. Social media offers a cost-effective way to get an online presence going.

Wide Reach

By now, nearly five billion people worldwide use social media. I don’t know about you, but I remember when that was roughly the world’s total population.

That’s a lot of bang for your buck, in terms of efforts at reaching a wide and diverse audience.

Target Different Audiences Across Platforms

Some platforms are more popular with different age groups and other demographics. They also work differently, and are oriented around different types of media (writing, pictures, videos).

Accordingly, you can reach different audiences using different platforms. Adjusting and repurposing your content to best suit each platform helps best appeal to those audiences.

That leads to the next helpful feature of social media platforms – analytics tools.

Analytics Tools to Help Guide You

Social media platforms offer data analytics tools to help show you what’s working, and what needs improvement. This is invaluable in guiding you to improve your success, and maximize your efforts.

Graphics Tools to Create Your Posts

Promoting yourself on social media offers a great exercise in creativity. If you don’t want to do it all from scratch, though, you luckily don’t have to already be skilled in graphics or video editing – there are great tools out there to help you, including free or low cost ones.

For example; check out Canva (they have both a free and a paid option) for making awesome text and picture posts (like Facebook or Twitter), and an app called Video Guru for creating great looking videos (like YouTube or TikTok).
